As we entered into the 21st century the predictions of a drastic demographic shift in the workforce has come to fruition. American business leaders warned there would be shortage of workers with the knowledge and skills in science, engineering and technology. Furthermore, they feared our ability to competent in a global marketplace.
Developing our own ‘home grown’ talent is the best solution. Educate our non-traditional (i.e., diverse) students the necessary critical-thinking and problem-solving skills that our businesses require. Most important, our government should jump on the band wagon to increase its investment in our national youth to ensure there is no shortage of workers in science, engineering and technology.
As a result our home-grown talented students can share with students from countries who consistently produce the best and brightest science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) students like Singapore, Korea and Japan.
This can be one of American businesses best opportunities as we look into the future with our own home-grown talent; thus, having distinct competitive advantage in today’s diverse and global economy.
How would your organization address the technology industry’s workforce shortage? Or is there really a shortage at all?
