Guide to becoming a nurse. Nursing has been a respected profession since Victorian times. And, today, nurses make up a huge chunk of the healthcare system. We rely on nurses to assist with patients and provide support to their families. It is not an easy job, but it is one with many benefits, including a high salary and, most importantly, the opportunity to make a difference. Today, Resume Writers’ Ink outlines the basics to join one of the most meaningful and important professions out there.

If you are thinking about changing professions, nursing is an excellent option. However, it is not a career where you can simply receive on-the-job training, you have to earn a degree first. Most nurses choose an in-person program; more and more, though, working adults looking for a career change choose to give online nursing programs a try. There are many competitively priced, fully accredited universities that let you do the bulk of your work remotely, which can allow you to continue working and raising your family while you receive an education. Once you have completed your degree, typically a bachelor’s of science in nursing, you will have to apply for your nursing license.

Job Outlook

Something to consider as you begin your new career is that you are not limited to your original path. There are many nursing specialties that will grow in demand, particularly as the baby boomer population continues to age. In addition to working at a hospital or other clinical environment, you might also choose to be a camp nurse, a nurse-midwife, a correctional facilities nurse, a domestic violence nurse, or, if you want a fast-paced job that puts lives in your hands, you might consider being a flight nurse on either a civilian or military aircraft.

Additional Benefits

Obviously, the pay is a major draw for people looking to get into nursing. But, as Healthline explains, there are many other benefits to consider. One is the potential for a flexible schedule. Because nursing is so in-demand, you can likely choose your own schedule. Nursing is also considered one of the most trusted professions in Canada. Furthermore, you’ll have travel opportunities and, as mentioned previously, lots of room for advancement.

While it is true that nursing can be a physically draining career, it is also one of the most uplifting. When you have an opportunity to help others, you find purpose in yourself. Coupled with plenty of room for advancement and a more-than-respectable salary, it’s easy to see why nursing is a job worth more than a second look. It is a stable, long-term career for those looking to add meaning to their lives and to the lives of others.
